Palliative care

Palliative care and end of life issues (2011). Dr Yvonne McMaster. Address to Sydney Adventist Hospital Prostate Cancer Support Group on 26 September 2011. Provided to us by the PCFA. Our review: The contents of this DVD will be of value to people who have an interest in palliative care in general, planning for end of life and in management of pain. Dr McMaster covers a broad range of topics including: how hard it is to die the way that one would want; the importance of getting treatment that satisfies your wishes; dying at home Vs dying in an institution; management of pain and other symptoms relating to cancer and treatments; the possibility that palliative relief of symptoms might in some cases be more appropriate than unpleasant treatments such as more chemotherapy; benefits of medications such as paracetamol, morphine and its derivatives; importance of exercise and diet; and the value of support groups. The presentation is non-technical and a model of clarity. Well worth watching even if you have a good life expectancy.
